Romance doesn’t always mean grand gestures, trips to Paris or surprise theatre tickets – it can mean everyday things too. It can mean making the effort, even when we don’t feel like it. You’ve often heard it said that love isn’t a feeling, it’s a decision we make every day. One way is having a specified date night for just the two of you – and I’m here to tell you how to make that happen.

Get a babysitter

The evening won’t be romantic if your toddler walks into the room asking for another glass of water, so make sure the kids spend the night at their grandparents’ house or wait until you know they will definitely be asleep. Get rid of any distractions, take the dog for a walk and feed your pets so they won’t be trying to get your attention during the night.

Set the tone

Turn down those blaring overhead lights, light some candles, put the fireplace on and get ready to set the mood. There’s plenty you can do to make a night in more romantic, starting with the atmosphere. Low, candlelit lighting already speaks volumes and provides a more intimate ambiance. You can also turn some romantic music on low, make sure the house is a nice temperature, and of course double check that it’s tidy.

Break out the bubbly

Nothing says romance more than a bottle of champagne and two flutes. After a long day at work or with the kids, a little alcohol might be just what the doctor ordered. Cheers to your relationship and the start off your romantic evening for two. If you’re not really champagne drinkers you change it to red wine or even some craft beer – you could even try creating your own romance cocktail.

Plan dinner

A romantic night in always starts with the right meal. If you’re short of time, opt for something like homemade burgers with your own specially toppings. You could even cut a few corners by adding a side of McCain Gastro Chips – triple cooked chips that taste just like proper pub food. Or, if you really do want to go all out, buy some fresh steaks and enjoy with cheddar mushrooms and fluffy mash.

Put in the effort

Pyjamas may be comfy, but they’re not the best attire for a romantic night in. Making an effort doesn’t need to take a lot of work and it says to your loved one that you care enough to make this night special. Put on that favourite dress or freshly pressed shirt and tie before spritzing a little perfume or cologne. Scent is one of the strongest of the five senses and directly relates to whether we feel romantic or not. Make sure you smell nice by wearing one of these top romantic fragrances – little things like this will go a long way.

With these top tips you’re sure to have a perfect romantic night in with the one you love. Do you have any other ideas for how to make the most of your night in? Let me know in the comments below.
